One of the great things about the iPhone is that it is like having a newspaper in your pocket. In my case, I check the NY Times usually once a day, just to get a flavor for whats going on in the world. As such, I have the NY Times iPhone application on my phone.
It provides a pretty awesome reading experience, in my view, giving me the top news and thumbnails in a nice layout, all presented in the well worn style of the Times. And so you’d think I’d be happy. But I’m not- I’m sad. And it all comes back to performance. I’m sitting here on the GC wifi network, and it takes something like 8-10 seconds for the NY Times app to open and the new stories to be downloaded so I can read them. In contrast, It takes about 3 seconds for the ESPN.com homepage to open in the Safari browser. And what a difference 5 seconds makes.
Anyone else seeing such crappy performance?
Hi Mr. Teague, I came across your post today talking about the iPhone app store and was wondering if if it would be okay if I used some of your graphs for a blogpost over at EdibleApple.com, a site covering Apple related news.
If it's cool with you, I will definitely make it clear that the charts are "Courtesy of.." or "Printed with permission from" blog.charlesteague.com. Just drop me an email and lemme know!
If not, it's no big deal, but I figured I'd ask :)
Anywhoo, keep up the good app store analysis!

Same here. The NYTimes iPhone App is simply unusable, even over WiFi. USA Today iPhone App is a superior alternative and I highly recommend it.
