I recently undertook a home improvement project to deal with the large volumes of data that we're now generating- specifically digital music, photos, and videos. To date, I had simply
let all the data sit on the hard drives of the various computers that we own.So after some research, I decide to plop down the dough and grab a Buffalo Terrastation. Reviews online were definitely mixed, but I wasn't looking for max performance, easy drive swapability, etc... I basically wanted something quiet, small, simple to setup, and low maintenance. On paper, the Terrastation definitely satisfied this.
In real life, so far, the story is the same. It was a breeze to setup, has required no maintenance, and is quiet. I have it set up using RAID 5, so I tacked 750GB of storage onto my network for a measly $735. Not bad!
Additional notes: I added a Netgear gigabit swtich to my network the other day, and the Buffalo terrastation simply will not link to the network when its attached to this gigabit switch. This is, of course, a bummer. I did a little research on the web and there are reports of similar problems with Terrastations and Linksys switches of some kinds. I wonder what the deal is- if anyone has any guessed, I'd love to hear them!
