George Ou does a little research to compare the resource usage of OpenOffice and MS Office. Surprisingly (or perhaps not), the winner by a large margin is MS Office. It's hard not to respect the resources and effort that the Office team has put into creating an important piece of software. You may have seen the question posed- whether you'd keep your browser or MS Office if you had to give one up (most people seem to want to keep the browser), but the great news is that you don't have to choose. And despite the many complaints about Office (many well founded), the Office team provide hundred of millions of users with a useful tool, and they get an awful lot right. How many people can say that?
From this table, we can see that OpenOffice.org is indeed a memory and CPU hog. It is literally taking up about 10 times the processing time and memory to just load the application itself along with a blank file. It doesn't matter how fast the CPU is, 10 times is 10 times and OpenOffice is simply bloated.
